Promise of Hybrid Meetings by DeDe Mulligan

There are hybrid cars, bikes, and golf clubs. But meetings? How will that look and why should you consider it?

Just like everything else, blending face-to-face and online/virtual events will probably be the future for meetings, conferences, conventions, and trade shows.

For Christopher Gribbs, managing director of conference services, at The American Institute of Architects (AIA), the "aha moment" for the potential of hybrid meetings came at the 2009 AIA Annual Conference in San Francisco. AIA had about 22,400 people registered to attend the live meeting, down about 7% from the previous year in Boston. But when the 5,500 virtual registrants were included, AIA wound up with a record number of registrants!

Benefits of Online/Virtual Events

· Participants can log in anywhere in the world and can be part of an event they might not normally attend due to budget and time constraints.

· By archiving sessions, attendees can access online that session throughout the year.

· Exhibitors can be given virtual booth space.

· Most venues have the ability to allow for live broadcasts from the meeting.

· Speakers are often pleased with the virtual component because they know people are watching. They will often get access to an audience that they could not have reached before.

So Why Go Hybrid?

What percentage of your potential audience comes to your physical event? With an association, this number is easy. Just divide your total attendance by your total membership. With a corporate event, you need to consider how many individuals will need to fly or drive to the event, plus hotel and meals expenses. If the attendee number is low for the association and/or the cost to bring people to the event is high, consider a hybrid event.

What is the financial position of your attendees? Are they losing their jobs and getting laid off? Are firms closing their doors? Are people doing more with less? Again, looking at the overall picture of your attendees will influence whether a hybrid event makes sense.

"Within three to five years, I would say, most conference services associations will be moving to a three-dimensional immersive virtual platform to provide greater value to their membership," says Mike Westcott, vice president of marketing at InXpo. "It still doesn't give you the face-to-face engagement that is so valuable to people and it's never going to displace live meetings, but it is a wonderful complement to existing events."

The Blunder Of Honda's Great Gas Mileage

From its inception, Honda Motor Co. has been more concerned with fuel economy and emissions than any other manufacturer. This has been evident since Honda entered America's automobile market in 1971 with the "n600." This was a 2-cylinder car that easily achieved 45 miles-per-gallon. They have repeatedly had at least one model of automobile, per generation that has superior gas mileage. These range from the CVCC, the CRX HF, the Civic VX, and most recently the Insight Hybrid.
In the last decade, however, Honda appears to have departed its small car and gas mileage roots in search of bigger profits. The change coincides with the death of Soichiro Honda, the founder of Honda Automotive. When Soichiro Honda died in 1991, an observable change in Honda's business model and priorities surfaced.
With the change of priorities, the economical cars by which Honda was known vanished, only to be replaced by giant trucks, vans, SVUs, and luxury cars that would make our grandparents jealous. The company that was once known for making "those little cars" became the company that made "those big cars." The new Honda appeared to be in direction opposition of what the old Honda was about.
When Honda was busy making giant money-makers, Toyota decided to take a chance and develop something truly amazing: the full-sized hybrid. While Honda later followed suit with a smaller commuter vehicle, it was too late. Toyota had the hearts and minds of people who cared about fuel economy, emissions, and safety. The name Honda reminded people of the giant Odyssey, or the once small but now large Civic. Toyota, on the other hand, sparked images of the clean, efficient Prius and the all electric RAV4.
Honda is now trying to clean up its image, by producing a version of the Civic that runs on natural gas, and even introducing the first commercially available hydrogen-powered vehicle. While these are all giant steps in the right direction, Honda still has a long way to go to make up for a decade of bad decisions.
Honda jumping on the big car bandwagon proved to be a mistake, one which has affected Hondas market share ever since. Profits may be up, but consumer confidence is down, at least compared to Toyota. The history and good name of Honda will definitely help it get back on top of the efficiency game, assuming that they still want the honor. It will prove difficult, however, to win the back the hearts and minds of people after such a disappointing blunder.

Hybrid Motor Parts and Preventive Maintenance

The performance of most cars is calibrated according a particular kind of terrain, sometimes even level ground. The maintenance required is also estimated by the same method as not all of us use the same type of terrain, your car may need a little more or a little less maintenance. Preventative maintenance is hence the best way to keep your car in good shape and make it last longer. Since the structure of a hybrid car is fairly complex compared to a regular car, only trained personnel should work on certain components, such as the power train. However, basic maintenance similar to that performed on standard cars, such as changing the oil, can still be done by you.
The basic parts of any hybrid car will include the battery pack, internal combustion engine, automated clutch, electric machine, a second automated clutch, motor winding equipment, drives, etc. As hybrids have two engines, one will run with gasoline and another on electricity, it will also have two sets of drives. Along with all this, it will need a control unit that will switch the car from gasoline drive to electric drive whenever the conditions are right.
The electric parts of the car will also include indicators on the dashboard that note the battery charge and fuel levels, along with the other usual parameters. All these parts will need checking and maintenance to some degree. However, hybrid batteries will last very long and typically need no maintenance. In fact, they're usually covered under an 8 year warranty, which should keep you worry free, as the battery is generally the most expensive part in the hybrid car. An extended warranty is also something one can go for as it helps you save a lot if something should go wrong with your car beyond the first 8 years.
Servicing should be done as instructed by the manufacturer which includes replacing oil, cleaning air filters, etc. Clean air filters increase the fuel efficiency and the performance of your car. As the ultimate purpose of the hybrid car is to save fuel and reduce emissions, keeping the car in top condition will help achieve your goal. The first parts that come with the factory packaging will be replaced as per the manufacturer's directions during the servicing. Most of them need replacement after a certain number of miles. The initial few replacements may be covered under warranty but these parts don't cost much unlike the hybrid car battery.
The hybrid car also has a generator which makes use of braking energy to charge the battery. The drive train of a hybrid car, including the hybrid car motor, needs a lot of expertise for repairing or replacing in general. It is best to go to an authorized dealer with your car than the local auto repair shop as there is a chance they can damage it further. Buying a hybrid car is the least you can do for the environment and by keeping it in good condition will not only help the performance but will also increase its lifespan. A well kept car will also fetch more in the used car market.

Bergen County, NJ used GLK drivers ready for next wave of Mercedes cars by Roscoe Roberts

We've all heard that good things come in small packages. Now Mercedes will prove it with new line of small-sized luxury vehicles, which will debut next year with the C-Class Coupe. Some adapted B-Class models will follow in 2012 and 2013.
Rockland County, NY used GLK dealers are stoked about the new line and believe that buyers will be as well. Mercedes-Benz has recently wowed luxury car fans with its improved S-Class and more plans for green cars.
"Everyone want to be Mercedes-Benz," claimed Ernst Lieb, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. He's probably right. This new line also will allow Mercedes to compete with some brands that it currently does not directly compete with model-to-model.
Here's what some of the models may look like. The B-Class coupe, crossover and sedan versions, set to arrive in the U.S. in 2012 and 2013, will have the distinction of being the first front-wheel drive cars sold by Mercedes stateside. They will be given a makeover, refining the profile from its boxy B-Class look and leaning more toward something that would sell well here - like the BlueZero concept car shown at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.
These models also may receive a different tag, something fresh other than B-Class. They are, though, expected to run on four-cylinder engines, developed in a partnership with Renault-Nissan. These engines are being designed with turbos and direct injection. Bergen County, NJ used GLK customers should find the power more than adequate for these smaller vehicles.
Coming even sooner, is the F cell. By the end of this year, Mercedes-Benz should have its electric fuel cell version of the European B Class here in the U.S. market. They won't be for sale yet, though, as test marketing will take place in California because of a large number of available charging stations. Mercedes hopes to tests 100 of these vehicles, which has a 240-mile range. Wow! That puts some other brands' electrics to shame.
Also, expect a redesign on the C-Class for 2013. Maybe even a crossover and a convertible, as well as the whole family getting four-cylinder engines. The good news for us is that they will be built right here in the good ol' USA in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Rockland County, NY used GLK buyers will feel even better about purchasing a U.S.-built Mercedes.
The S-Class has a new S63 version with a 5.5-liter biturbo engine and will be available in November. True auto enthusiasts will be lined up for that one. The S class also will get a full hybrid in 2013 in the U.S. Mercedes-Benz is making over the SLK and SL models for 2011 and the GLK will be freshened in 2012, with a full GL redesign in 2013.
One really interesting line of the Mercedes-Benz fleet, the G-Class, as a military-style vehicle with a V8, G550 engine, and the Sprinter, a commercial is powered by a V6 diesel. A new Crew Van which seats five will be available within a few weeks and the MiniBus, a van seating up to 16, will go on sale sometime in 2011. Bergen County, NJ used GLK dealers are excited about all of these new lines.
