Ever since the green frenzy started, automobile industry has been evolving into different phases. Some car manufacturers have resorted to making smaller and more fuel efficient cars due to high gasoline prices. Can we blame them?
When we talk about Green Cars, we also have to consider affordability in them. Can we afford these green cars? What's the point of buying a green fuel efficient car if it costs $35,000? Guys at the Green Car Award did all the calculations and the hard stuff for us.
Green Car Award's formula for calculating the winner involves the use of car's initial MSRP price, 5 years worth of gasoline (an indication of pollution), and it considers that the car is driven 12,000 miles per year.
The winners were somewhat obvious and predictable, although there are a few surprises. Hybrid cars' initial high MSRP price basically disqualified them from winning the Green Car Award.
The Final Top 5 Most Affordable Green Cars
1. Smart Fortwo
2. Hyundai Accent
3. Toyota Yaris
4. Kio Rio
5. Chevrolet Aveo
So while cars like Prius didn't make the final cut, its smaller and more affordable brother Yaris has. Honda Fit also came in close behind these cars.
