Have you noticed a plethora of books and articles on water for gas, or the car companies aggressive marketing of hybrid vehicles? You might think you need to do something special to save money at the pump. You don't. Do not let the hype prevent you from taking action today. There are very simple steps you can take to improve your gas mileage on your current vehicle and save money on your gas budget.
First, do not be aggressive behind the wheel. Studies show that the biggest bang for buck change in gas mileage comes with aggressive driving habits. Every time you punch it trying to move ahead of that 'stupid driver' you're tossing cash out of your wallet and through your exhaust pipe. Fast acceleration and hard breaking are not always easy habits to break. Today take note of your own driving habits and try to be more moderate in your acceleration and breaking.
Second, slow down. It's true that driving the speed limit will improve your gas mileage. This fact may not sit well with those impatient drivers behind you. However, if you move over from the left lane and patiently travel to your destination in the right lane, it's possible to find other drivers doing the very same thing by going the limit.
Third, drive less. It sounds silly to include this tip, but it's worth sitting down and considering your daily routine. Consider telecommuting if your employer allows, combine errands with other trips, carpool or use public transportation. There are any number of ways to drive less and you're only limited by your creativity and willingness to try something new.
Spending less on gas doesn't require any investment in conversion kits or new cars, only a little of your time to change your habits and routines.
