Cars and their Efficiency - Is Your Car Really Efficient?

No, probably your car is not efficient. This is not surprising because typical cars are usually very inefficient unless you have a hybrid, an electric car or some other type of car that uses alternative source of energy.

But what exactly is efficiency? Efficiency is the ratio of the output we get from a system to the input we put in the system.

But why this is so important? This is very important because this has a direct effect on your wallet. A very large effect indeed! Do you know that when you go to fill up your fuel tank with that costly gasoline you are literally throwing away over 85% of your money in the air?

Yes that's right! An ordinary gasoline engine uses only about 15% of the energy from the fuel that you put in the tank to move your car down the road.

The rest of the energy is lost to engine and driveline inefficiencies and idling. Therefore, the potential to improve fuel efficiency with advanced technologies and driving properly is enormous.

You may also argue that it is not in the interest of the automotive industry to increase efficiency. This may be true or may not be true.

However it is surely not in the interest of the petroleum industry to be done so. The more your car engine is efficient the less your engine uses fuel, the less you pay on fuel and so the more you save. Of course this saving that goes into your pocket is usually paid to the petroleum industry.

Although you are limited on how much you can improve the efficiency of your car because of technology restrictions, you can easily improve the fuel efficiency by keeping your car in the best possible conditions to consume less fuel. You can also improve the efficiency of your car by driving in the correct way.

You may also wish to consider simple modifications on your car that considerably increase the efficiency of your car. This will make you save a big deal on your fuel bill.
